We’ve visited the Chinese restaurant at Castle Hill RSL Club for both yum cha and dinner, and had a great experience each time. The food is consistently tasty and well presented, and the service has always been friendly and efficient. It is a little on the pricier side, but overall we felt it was worth it for the quality and atmosphere. It’s also very family-friendly, with high chairs available and plenty of space for prams, which makes dining with kids much easier.

I went here for yum cha lunch and the experience was quite average. On the positive side, the staff were friendly and the service was very fast. The fitout also looks very nice - classical Chinese vibe! However, the food was very mediocre and I felt the quality did not match the higher than average prices that we paid. We tried a wide range of dishes, but honestly I only enjoyed the prawn sesame toast and the seafood chive dumplings. Everything else was either just okay or a definite 'nope'. The beef roll and mango pancakes were a very big disappointment!

Jin Yan Asian Cuisine Review on 2/1/2026 | Location: Castle Hill RSL Jin Yan restaurant is within the Castle Hill RSL. The dining room captures the quintessential Yum Cha atmosphere — vibrant and alive with the hum of large family gatherings. For our group of ten, it was the perfect setting for a comprehensive tasting of their extensive menu. The Steamed Selection Xiao Long Bao: This was the standout of the afternoon. Served in individual porcelain spoons, they commanded a moment of silence as we carefully enjoyed the rich broth. While the ginger notes could have been more pronounced, these are easily the finest I have encountered in Australia—true liquid gold in a delicate pouch. Har Gao: The skins were slightly more opaque than the traditional translucent standard. However, they were technically sound, surviving the "chopstick-lift" without tearing, and filled with exceptionally plump, fresh prawns. Har Cheong Fun: The rice noodle rolls were silky and slippery. Unfortunately, the experience was slightly marred by the absence of the traditional sweet soy sauce, which is essential for balancing the dish. Deep-Fried & Textural Highlights Taro Puffs (Wu Kok): These featured expertly crafted honeycomb shells that shattered beautifully upon entry, revealing a smooth, savory taro mash. Char Liong: A successful study in contrast, featuring soft rice noodles wrapped around a crunchy You Tiao (fried dough stick). Timing is critical here; the dish must be enjoyed immediately to prevent the You Tiao from becoming unpalatable and soggy. Fried Taro Cake: Each slice was seared to a perfect golden crisp, creating a beautiful aromatic contrast against the soft, tender center. Fried Squid Tentacles: A crowd favourite — salty, spicy, and highly addictive. Though often ordered for the younger diners, they were equally enjoyed by the adults for their tender texture and bold seasoning. Traditional Delicacies Beef Tendon & Beef Tripe: These "pro-level" dishes were braised to a superb, melt-in-the-mouth consistency. While the braising liquid was a bit light in flavor, the technical execution of the textures was spot on. Lao Sa Bao (Salted Egg Custard Buns): The highlight of the dessert round. Tearing them open revealed a molten, golden custard. The dough was somewhat thick, acting as a "heavy-duty container" for the liquid filling, which slightly detracted from the overall balance. Final Verdict Jin Yan is not a small, street-side Hong Kong cafe; it is a premium restaurant experience. It offers a spacious environment, a frantic but efficient pace, and high-quality delicacies. It is a formidable lunch destination that will undoubtedly leave you satisfied well into the next day.

We often come here for yum cha, whether that be the weekend or weekday and usually service is relatively quick and efficient. However, today was extremely slow. I understand that on weekdays everything tends to be cooked fresh to order but the wait between dishes was ridiculous. We placed our order around 11:25am with about 9 or so dishes. We waited about 15min for the first 2 to arrive and soon after the 3rd dish arrived. Decent start. However we then proceeded to wait about 45min for the other remaining dishes to arrive and ended up cancelling the last one because it didn't arrive along with the others and I don't think they even started on it. I could see that other patrons at the restaurant who were already there before our arrival were also only just getting their food a little before us but we also saw patrons who arrived after us who were also sometimes getting food before us. Not sure what the system is but it definitely was never this slow on the weekday. Food was fresh and delicious but would definitely not wait over 45min for it. My toddler also got so bored sitting, waiting, snacking, walking in the area that when food finally arrived, he no longer showed any interest. Disappointed but hope they run more efficiently.

Ordered steamed dumplings but icy inside, they kindly remade it but the condition was the same. Other than this, was all good.
