We’ve been here a few times and it does satisfy cravings for Hong Kong food. We ordered the salted egg pork cake, black pepper pork chop baked rice with cheese, wanton noodle soup, sweet and sour pork and toast (Hong Kong style?) The toast was quite disappointing, but possibly because we didn’t have it while it was hot. It was quite bland and needed quite a bit of honey - which they give a bottle of. My favourites were definitely the sweeet and sour pork and the wanton noodle soup. The pork was tender and flavourful, coated generously in the sauce. The noodles were so hearty and tasted amazing, not overly salty but still very flavourful. The pork cake was very very salty, it also takes a bit longer to come than the other dishes so we had finished a lot of our rice by then. Would probably preferred to have had it with more plain rice but we were stuffed by then. We also had some of their drinks, I found the Hong Kong milk tea and the coffee tea combination to be a bit bland tasting. They do have sugar syrup for you to control the sweetness yourself.
Our family enjoyed our birthday dinner at the restaurant, ordered pipis on vermicelli, steamed coral trout, seafood tofu, fried pigeon and stie fried kailan with salted fish. Totally yummy and satisfying! If not for the distance we would be back regularly for more! We had complimentary soup to start which nice!
I came across an advertisement. $29 for steamed live barramundi, only on Tuesday. I was tempted to come all the way to try. The result is very disappointing. It takes 30 minutes for the fish to arrive on table after ordering it. The plate was cold, and the fish is immersed in oil, no fish soya sauce with it. I have to ask the waiter to give me fish soya sauce to go with it. The texture of the fish is very tough, can’t finish most of it. My past experiences with steamed live barramundi in other restaurants are a lot better. I don’t know this time this dish sub-standard quality was caused by the chef cooking skills or the fish itself. If I knew the dish quality like that, I wouldn’t have come to try. Very disappointing and I won’t recommend this to anyone at all. Later I talked to people in the trade, showed them the photos, they suspected the kitchen is not giving me the live barramundi from the tank they showed me. They are giving me a frozen barramundi in the kitchen instead. That’s why it takes so long to defrost it, and serve it on the table (30 minutes). The meat is tough. But I cannot verify that (but the fish in the plate does look a lot smaller than the live fish they show me). I wish the restaurant management shall look into this matter. If the restaurant uses this offer to attract people to visit your place, they should provide a genuine dish with high quality to customers, be an ethical operation. If the restaurant charged customers $29 just for a frozen barramundi, it is a ripe off.
Been in a few times and a big fan. Some dishes are definitely better than others though my opinion. Personally strongly recommend the 皮蛋瘦肉粥 (century egg and pork congee) - this is a massive bowl filled with meat and egg and extremely yummy and good value. The soft tofu casserole and Singapore noodles also very good! Personally recommend steering clear of the glutinous fried rice 生炒糯米饭 - it’s a bit too sticky and clumped together for me
Classic restaurant in Hurstville that has a large menu of Hong Kong style cuisine suitable for all times of day with various set menus and a la carte. Good food and service for a reasonable price.
