Canton Cafe in Haymarket delivered one of the most satisfying Chinese meals I've had in Sydney. The egg fried rice was outstanding—light, fragrant and perfectly cooked, with each grain remaining separate and full of flavour rather than becoming oily or heavy. The Szechuan-style chicken was the star of the meal, offering a wonderful balance of heat, spice and savoury depth. The dish had the authentic numbing and aromatic characteristics that make Szechuan cuisine so distinctive, while remaining approachable and incredibly enjoyable. The BBQ chicken hotpot with rice was equally impressive. The chicken was tender and flavourful, the sauce rich and comforting, and the overall dish felt hearty without being overwhelming. Every component was well-seasoned and prepared with care. Beyond the food, the service was warm, attentive and efficient. Staff were welcoming, orders arrived promptly, and the dining experience felt relaxed despite the busy Haymarket location. A fantastic combination of authentic flavours, generous portions and excellent service. Canton Cafe is definitely a place I would happily return to and recommend to anyone looking for quality Cantonese and Szechuan-style cuisine in Sydney.
Barbecue dishes are good and almost just like in Hong Kong. The stir fried beef noodles (gan chao ngau fan) is always piping hot and perfectly seasoned (and noodles aren’t clumpy!!) The hot HK style milk tea is fine but sort of lacking the thick characteristic tea flavour I’m looking for. Nothing remarkable about atmosphere or service - though all the people working as waitstaff are young 😭😭 and sometimes they look rather clueless or confused. Lots of office workers seem to come here to eat for lunch on weekdays.
If you are looking for authentic, hearty Cantonese comfort food in Haymarket, Canton Cafe is an absolute must-visit. We dined here recently and were thoroughly impressed by the generous portions, the high quality of the dishes, and the incredible value for money. 1. The Ultimate Combo: Beef Offal Pot Set Meal We ordered the Beef Offal Pot Set Meal (牛杂煲套餐), and the value is unbeatable. The set is extremely practical and well-balanced, coming with the main pot, a stir-fried dish, a plate of fresh vegetables, and two bowls of rice. The star of the show, the Beef Offal Pot, was packed to the brim with perfectly stewed, tender offal that was rich in flavor. The portion size is massive—there was more than enough food to completely satisfy two hungry adults. It’s easily one of the most cost-effective and comforting meals you can find in the area. 2. Crispy & Flavorful: Typhoon Shelter Prawns Another standout dish was the Typhoon Shelter Prawns (避风塘虾). The execution was flawless. The prawns were beautifully seasoned with crisp garlic and chili, and they were fried to perfection. The shells were so crispy and light that they added an amazing texture to the succulent prawn meat inside. Highly recommended for anyone who loves bold, classic Cantonese seafood flavors. 3. Giant Baked Rice Portions We also tried one of their Baked Rice (焗饭) dishes. Once again, the sheer size of the serving blew us away. It was deeply satisfying, with a generous layer of cheese/sauce on top and plenty of ingredients mixed throughout. You definitely won’t leave this restaurant feeling hungry! 4. A Small Note on Service The only minor downside to our meal was that the Beef Offal Pot set was supposed to include two bowls of the Daily Soup (例汤), but unfortunately, it was missed and never brought to our table. The restaurant was quite bustling, so it was likely just a small oversight during a busy service. Summary: Despite the tiny hiccup with the soup, the exceptional food quality, delicious flavors, and massive portions make Canton Cafe a 5-star experience in my book. The value you get here is rare for Sydney’s CBD. We will definitely be back with friends to try more of their extensive menu!
Getting Roasted in Haymarket 🥩🔥 If you're looking for delicious, authentic and good value Cantonese food in Sydney, look no further than Canton. I've been to a few roast meats venues and this is one of the best in the city. The Verdict: The Pork Belly crackling is deafeningly crunchy, and the Char Siew has that perfect honey-glaze char. Pairing it with their Hainanese Chicken Rice just elevates everything. 🤤 What we smashed: 🥓 Pork Two Ways – Roast Pork Belly & Char Siew 🍚 Hainanese Chicken Rice 🥦 Seasonal Veggies in XO Sauce ☕️ Pro Tip: Don’t ignore the free herbal tea. It’s refreshing and it cuts right through the richness of the pork.
First visit. There were four of us so it made sense to order the set menu which includes a glass of wine. We were seated upstairs where it was nice and quiet. We had to keep getting up to get the waiter's attention. We started with a set entree which included fried chicken wing, dim sim, spring roll and won ton. The bbq course you can choose 2, we went for roast pork and duck. Then you choose 3 mains and it comes with a huge plate of fried rice. We went for honey prawns, satay chicken and beef in black bean. The prawns were large and crispy, the beef tender, the satay sauce had no peanut flavour. We had to get some takeaway containers as there was too much food. All up good value.
