It's not surprising there's usually a queue to get into Mr Stonebowl: you always get a lovely meal here. On a visit for a midweek eariy lunch before 12:00 pm, there's no wait for a table. Mr Stonebowl's menu is quite extensive, in both tempting variety and the number of dishes, so it can be a challenge to be selective and not order too many dishes. For lunch, we had: - Fujian braised pork belly - sweet and sour pork fillet with lychees - pork and glutinous rice sumai - steamed pork and chive dumplings - fried pork and chive dumplings - stir-fried udon noodles with truffle and pork - stir-fried black fungus, lotus root, Chinese yam and okra The Fujian braised pork belly was done to melt-in-mouth and tasty perfection. The sweet and sour pork fillet with lychees was delicious and appetising. The steamed pork and chive dumplings stood out, as did the fried ones. As usual, the stir-fried black fungus, lotus root, Chinese yam and okra provided a nice combination of texture and taste. Prices are reasonable, and the servings are generous and just the right size. What is striking is how the quality (in taste and preparation) stays consistent on every visit. Ordering is by scanning a QR code or a paper order. Service is friendly and efficient, and the food comes reasonably quickly. We did order too much, and had to take away the leftovers, even after the sacrifice of not ordering an old favourite - the Singapore style sea bass. Once again, Mr Stonebowl lived up to expectations, and we had a lovely lunch.
Excellent value. Innovative menu items but glad some classics like pan fried buns, xiao long bao, noodles are also available which the kids prefer at the end of the day. The more interesting dishes were presented with visual interest but the flavours themselves lacked nuance and reminded me of someone following a recipe well without tasting or care. It was Monday night so understandable if the head chef had a break. The lamb was overcooked, wasn’t juicy. Scallop fried rice was yummy. Given how quickly most dishes arrived, we think that the last dish was completely forgotten about by the kitchen. Waitstaff a bit indifferent, hard to catch the attention of. Glad to have booked for a group of 6 even on a weeknight. It’s a good meeting spot for inter generational dining where Chinese flavours are still used with modern presentation.
Again, I love all branches of Mr. Stonebowl. Got the classic MUSSELS & GARLIC PRAWN WITH STIR FRIED RICE IN SQUID INK SAUCE, which I’ve realised actually slightly varies between branches? The Hurstville one has deepfried prawns and some pickled vegetable pieces? Regardless I love all the branches iteration of this dish which is delicious! Also got the deep fried eggplant, truffle pork stir fry noodles, golden mantou and fujian braised pork belly. I think as a lover of pork belly, the fujian braised pork belly was my favourite but honestly everything off this restaurants menu is a must try at this point. Love it!
Very good food made for a lovely meal. I will definitely come back here to try new and different items. Packed and busy restaurant just after normal lunchtime in a Saturday so the ambiance was nothing special…not fancy but very functional. Staff are friendly but busy, and you order off of a QR-coded menu. Staff bring dishes out as they are served up so very little interaction, but it is very efficient. The food comes out hot and fresh. I do recommend it for a tasty meal!
came here for dinner and tried a few dishes that were new to us. We ordered the garlic prawn and mussel stir fried rice in squid ink sauce, the mix jelly with okra and flower clams, and the stir fried rice noodle with clam in XO sauce. The squid ink rice was the favourite. It arrived sizzling in the stone bowl with prawns and mussels on top, covered with melted cheese. The rice gets crispy on the edges from the heat which gives it a nice contrast in texture. The XO rice noodles had good wok flavour and the clams were fresh. The mix jelly with okra and clams was different and refreshing. The sauce was salty and went well with the neutral flaor of the okra and combined with the jellyfish made it an excellent dish. Portions are generous and the food comes out fast. The menu has a lot of variety so it is fun to try new things each time. Ordering through the QR system is straightforward and the staff check in often to see if you need anything. The staff were also very nice to let us stay past closing without making us feel rushed and it was a very good experience overall. I would definitely come back again.
