** Make sure it is the one with the black sign - there are several 'Shanghai Nights' along this stretch. Black sign and 9 Liverpool Road is the first and original, smallest and oldest ** Went to have dinner with my family, two of whom are vegan/vegetarian, so this place was really good. We had many varieties of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes to try and I ordered the xiao long bao and congee to see how good they are. I especially love their eggplant in garlic sauce (it is a dry dish, no runny sauce). Their xiao long bao were also very good and soupy. The congee was good too, but I have had better. I would recommend other dishes, maybe not their congee, though. The restaurant itself is quite old and appear run down, but the service was very friendly and the food is very good. Always buzzing with customers for such a small, 'hole in the wall' place in Ashfield. Definitely will come back to eat again.

We had a good dining experience on a weekday with family. We ordered pan fried dumplings, Ja Jian Mein, peking duck wrap, Xiao Long Bao dumplings The portions are very generous, highly recommend the Pan Fried dumplings, the rest was average. The restaurant gets busy around the 7pm. I prefer thin skin Xiao Long Bao so found these too thick. The Ja Jian Mien was spicy and didnt enjoy the flavour. Duck wrap was yum, a little salty and cucumber wasnt fresh but enjoyable. The best buy was the $5 bag prawn cracker!

I’ve been here a few times and the filling is a bit of a hit and miss. The most recent visit, the xiao long bao was too gingery. An observation would be the dumpling wrappers are a bit thicker than others - nothing good or bad just observation and personal preference. The serving size for the cost is amazing, and two plates is enough to fill up three people.

We wanted northern style Chinese dumplings and we got them… in gigantic servings and packed full of meat. But also expect more than the usual thickness in dough as well. Definitely value for money and between the six of us, we had 10 dishes and paid $30 each (and took four takeaway tubs back home). We ordered: 1) Classic Pork and chives dumplings - good flavour balance 2) Prawn and pork dumplings - my favourite with chunky bits of prawn! 🍤 in green dough… dough could be thinner 👍 3) Xiaolongbao - juicy! 👍 4) Gluten free chicken dumplings - could be improved. 5) Deep fried Salted duck yolk tofu and eggplant - acquired taste but so good if you love salted duck yolk. Massive servings! 6) Pan fried pork buns - again massive buns but if only the dough could be thinner. 7) Chinese veg - to cut through all that dough 👍 8) Wonton in chilli sauce and shredded cucumber - this was a top dish with thin wonton wrapper 👍 9) sweet and sour soup with lots of pork meat and Chinese vinegar - not really my thing 10) Peking fried beef - not too sweet and not too oily, it was crispy and delightful. One of the better versions around town 👍 BYO - these’s a Liqour store about 3 or 4 shops down or across the street at Aldi

Fantastic Chinese spot 👍. The pan‑fried pork buns and shallot pancake were crisped to perfection 👌, and the Shanghai‑style sweet & sour pork chops nailed that savoury‑sweet balance 😋. Portions are big, so expect tasty leftovers 😁. Service was friendly and professional 😌, and the place was neat and tidy ✨.
