The Char has been in Balmain for a few years now and remains rightly popular serving a great range of fresh salads, barbecue or Portuguese chicken, salmon and burgers. Service is efficient and polite. Really it’s a takeaway but good quality. Kudos for keeping the packaging simple and minimal. Cash and cards accepted.

Sadly, this place has really gone downhill—especially with DoorDash orders. We’ve been regulars for years and usually get takeaway at least twice a week, so the change has been noticeable. The chicken breast portions seem to have halved recently, and the chips often taste like they’ve been reheated. It almost feels like you’re getting completely different food depending on whether you order through DoorDash or pick it up yourself. This used to be a go-to for an easy dinner in our routine, which makes it even more disappointing. With competition like El Jannah coming in, I really hope they lift their standards—because it was genuinely great for a long time.

Might be the best quarter chook in inner Sydney . Nice Bain Marie style warm salad selection friendly staff and that chook is healthy as and lean. Smoky over fatty just a beautiful piece of chook
