Pro: The sushi is fresh and I love the omelette rice. It looks nice and yummy. The service is quite attentive. We went there early for a Sat diner, so they have 4 floor staff. The place is spacious, a lot more space than usual Jap restaurant. Good for family with prams. Con: Don't order the main, although they taste ok but it is a rip off. We paid $50 for the so call Wagyu beef steak, it don't even come in a piece. It is just few chunks of Wagyu beef. I expected the tomahawk pork chop would be bigger but it is quite small. I have to order another rice dish after eating the pork chop. The salad is fresh but serving is a bit small.

I have dined at Kuru many times and have never ever been disappointed in the food or service. Kuru provides so many wonderful and delicious dishes that's its hard to jot order one of everything! Staff are amazing and helped navigate my food allergies, I felt so safe eating here as a coeliac. Thanknyou Kuru 🙏

Visited for lunch and ordered the chicken udon. The udon itself was fine, however the chicken tasted a bit strange. After a few bites, I felt the chicken was off and didn’t taste right, so I stopped eating it as I am currently pregnant. I let the staff know, and they came back after checking with the kitchen saying the chicken had been delivered that morning. I didn’t want to argue, but I was disappointed that my concern didn’t seem to be taken more seriously or investigated further, especially considering pregnancy food safety concerns. When paying, they offered me a 15% discount. I initially refused, but they insisted since I had barely eaten the chicken, so I eventually accepted it. Overall, the experience was not great. Regardless of when the chicken arrived, if a customer says it tastes off, I think it should be acknowledged and looked into more carefully. The service and handling of the situation were disappointing.

Kuru claims to offer some of the best sushi in St Leonards, and that promise drew me in. I made a lunch booking and asked specifically for a quiet spot, so they seated us at the back near the kitchen. The venue is roomy and has plenty of seating, but immediately the setup made me feel a bit isolated from the main flow. Service felt understaffed, there was maybe one person on the floor handling a dozen or more used tables. The restaurant wasn’t full, so keeping staff lean might be cost-driven, but it showed in attentiveness. On to the food: the sashimi was solid and fresh, which was expected. The skewers were fine but nothing memorable. The nigiri and rolls, though, suffered: the rice was too firm and lacked the proper vinegar seasoning that gives good sushi its lift. The rolls ended up tasting more like what you might expect from a grab-and-go place, which is at odds with the “premium sushi” image the restaurant projects. Overall, Kuru feels like a Japanese restaurant that’s trying to bend to local demand rather than strongly holding to sushi craftsmanship standards. It’s not bad by any means, but given the reputation and the claims, it underdelivers in some key areas (rice, service). Because of that, it’s hard to say I’d rush back specifically for their “best sushi.”

This place has it all—great atmosphere, reasonable prices, excellent cleanliness, delicious food, and friendly service. I couldn't find a single thing to complain about. The dishes made with kimchi are especially outstanding and taste just like authentic Korean home cooking. Highly recommended!
