I went to Sho Sushi for my sister’s birthday, and it was a great place for a family dinner. The fish was incredibly fresh and of excellent quality, and the customer service was outstanding. One thing to keep in mind is that it is quite pricey and small portions — almost comparable to fine dining prices. If you’re planning to have a full meal and really enjoy a variety of dishes, I’d recommend saving up a bit beforehand. Overall, it was a wonderful experience with high-quality food and service.
I visited this sushi restaurant in Lane Cove with a reservation for 7:45pm, but arrived early around 7:00pm. The staff welcomed us very warmly and kindly despite us being early, which made a great first impression. We tried the sushi omakase set, several à la carte dishes, and donburi with uni, and overall the food was very enjoyable and satisfying. However, I was disappointed with the squid nigiri. The first piece unfortunately had a very thin hair attached to it. The staff apologized and replaced it immediately, and I completely understand that mistakes can happen in any restaurant. What disappointed me more was the quality and preparation of the squid itself. It was lightly aburi, but extremely tough and difficult to chew, while also somehow tasting undercooked. We ended up leaving both pieces unfinished. Since this issue happened twice with the same menu item, it felt less like a simple mistake and more like a lack of understanding of the ingredient and its proper preparation. Aside from the squid nigiri, everything else was excellent and we had a very enjoyable experience. But for a sushi restaurant where the spending is around $100 per person, I believe better attention to ingredient preparation and consistency is expected. With some improvement in this area, the experience would be much better overall.
My mother is Japanese, so I’ve grown up with fairly high standards when it comes to Japanese food. Sho Sushi is one of the few places in Sydney that genuinely impresses both of us. They offer many of the traditional dishes that my mum loves, and you can tell the kitchen has a real understanding of Japanese flavours and ingredients. The sashimi and seafood are exceptionally clean and well prepared, with none of the fishiness that often comes from lower-quality handling. Everything tastes incredibly fresh. As someone who is quite particular about food, I always leave satisfied. The attention to quality and consistency is evident in every visit. A fantastic spot for anyone who appreciates authentic Japanese cuisine and fresh seafood. Highly recommended. Highly recommended: Sea Urchin and Foie Gras Nigiri Scallop and Foie Gras Nigiri Wagyu Beef and Foie Gras Nigiri Must-try
Apart from the scallop and foie gras sushi at the end, which I genuinely enjoyed, everything else had its own issues. The sashimi was okay but not outstanding. The tuna was the only piece that tasted fresh. The prawn wasn’t fresh, and the white seafood at the bottom (I’m not even sure if it was squid) had a strange, rubbery texture that felt more like chewing silicone than seafood. The foie gras and wagyu rice bowl was also underwhelming. The charcoal flavour completely overpowered the wagyu, making it impossible to appreciate the quality of the beef. As for the minced tuna rice bowl, it honestly looked like canned cat food. It left a strong fishy aftertaste that lingered long after the meal. The service didn’t help either. The staff were polite, but their enthusiasm felt overly scripted and robotic rather than genuine, which made the whole experience feel quite uncomfortable. The seating was also extremely cramped. We were seated near the entrance, and every time someone opened the door, a blast of cold air came straight in, making it quite uncomfortable throughout the meal. Judging by the amount of promotion on rednote, I expected a much higher standard. Unfortunately, the food didn’t justify the hype, and the overall experience felt driven more by marketing than by quality. I wouldn’t return.
I had the chef's selection sashimi and nigiri. The food was beautifully presented and came out promptly in good order. The best part of the chef's selection was that the chef took time to come over and explain each dish succinctly. I agree that it is an "Omakase-lite" experience and would definitely come back to keep trying their seasonal offerings and specials! Edit: had to come back for more and it’s even better than the first time. The Wagyu beef mini don is a must try!!! The umaki was also very nice for hot food.
