We dined at Ho Jiak Haymarket with a group of 4. We tried the seasonal black truffle stir noodle, cereal crab, sesame ball dessert, bak kut teh and stir-fried beans. The Southeast Asian spice blends nicely with truffle flavour. Dishes are well-balanced for both seafood and staple food. Traditional local street food taste matched with refined cooking, a nice dining choice for small groups.

Ho Jiak is definitely one of the best Malaysian restaurants in Sydney! The food and service is always excellent, and you won’t regret visiting. Just keep in mind that the prices are a bit higher than other Malaysian restaurants, but the quality makes it well worth it.

The flavours are rich, aromatic, and full of that smoky wok hei taste that makes every dish so addictive. Everything pairs so well with rice, and the balance of spices, savoury flavours, and slight heat is done really well. Great spot for sharing with friends, with nice drink and dessert options too. Definitely a place I’d come back to.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Ho Jiak was one of those rare dining experiences that reminds you why people are willing to wait for a table. We had to wait about 20 minutes before being seated, but after finishing our meal, it was easy to understand why this place is so popular. The food, service, and overall experience made the wait completely worthwhile. The menu offers authentic Malaysian flavours, and everything we ordered felt comforting, fresh, and genuinely home-style rather than overly commercial or adjusted for mass appeal. You can tell that a lot of care goes into the preparation and presentation of each dish. I ordered the Nasi Lemak, which was absolutely delicious. The rice was fragrant and perfectly cooked, with the rich coconut flavour coming through beautifully. Every element on the plate complemented the others well, creating a balanced and satisfying meal. It tasted authentic and brought together the sweet, savoury, spicy, and aromatic flavours that make Malaysian cuisine so special. We also tried the Hainan Chicken Laksa, which was outstanding. The broth was rich, creamy, and full of flavour without being overly heavy. The chicken was tender and well-cooked, and the combination of laksa flavours with the Hainan-style chicken worked surprisingly well. It was comforting, hearty, and packed with depth. This was definitely one of the highlights of the meal. To accompany the food, I ordered a Lemon Iced Tea, and it was perfect. Refreshing, well-balanced, and not overly sweet, it paired wonderfully with the rich flavours of the dishes. Sometimes simple drinks can be overlooked, but this one was exactly what was needed and completed the meal nicely. What really elevated the experience was the service. Despite the restaurant being busy and having a queue outside, the staff remained friendly, attentive, and professional throughout our visit. We never felt rushed, and everyone we interacted with was welcoming and efficient. Good service can make a big difference to a dining experience, and the team at Ho Jiak certainly deserves recognition. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, creating a genuine sense of being in a popular local eatery. There was a steady buzz around the restaurant, but it never felt chaotic. Instead, it added to the overall charm and authenticity of the experience. Overall, Ho Jiak delivered everything you hope for when dining out: excellent food, friendly service, a great atmosphere, and flavours that feel authentic and comforting. The 20-minute wait for a table was a small price to pay for such a satisfying meal. If you’re looking for Malaysian food that feels home-style, flavourful, and made with care, Ho Jiak is absolutely worth visiting. I will happily return and look forward to trying more dishes from their menu.

Considering the reputation I expected more. It was fine but considering the queue at the door and the prices, I would probably opt to go somewhere else. Staff were absolutely slammed but trying their best given the busy lunchtime period. In short, not even close to the hype; this place is serving pretty standard Malay street food. You can find other places that are the same but cheaper and faster.
