Mamak Haymarket is a popular Malaysian restaurant in Sydney’s Chinatown. It is known for its Roti Canai, fluffy, airy looking roti served with curry to dip in. You eat it with your hands and dip it in the curry sauce and yes, it is delicious. I also ate a Nasi Lemak, a staple dish with rice, sambal, boiled eggs, and dried anchovies, which I also enjoyed. The reason for the rating is because the temperature inside the restaurant was absolutely freezing. It was raining outside and even with an umbrella many of us were damp. Inside the restaurant the air con was on very high making food cold quickly and keeping those of us wet feeling extra cold. Do know that there is a surcharge for credit card use normally and even higher on holidays. The food was great and the team working there friendly. Order at the front of the restaurant and then sit back and wait for truly flavorful food. Recommend

Mamak is insanely good. The food is outstanding. I ordered the roti—lightly rich, perfectly paired with curry—and it was excellent. The chicken and beef satay were on another level. I’ve rarely had something that tastes so unfamiliar yet so good at the same time. You’ll likely need to queue for about 30 minutes, but the experience is absolutely worth it. This is a must-try.

A visit to Mamak is absolutely worth it. There was a line when we arrived and we had to wait about 15 minutes—but honestly, that just speaks volumes about how good this place is. Once seated, ordering was super convenient through a barcode available at each table. The process was seamless, and the website was very user-friendly, making the whole experience smooth and efficient. What really stood out was how quickly the food arrived, almost felt it was record breaking! And the food itself? Exceptional go say the least. The flavours were rich, authentic, and incredibly satisfying. On top of that, the portion sizes were generous, so you definitely leave full and happy. To top it all off, the staff were polite, attentive, and kind, adding to an already fantastic dining experience. Highly recommend!

If there is one place in Sydney that understands late night hunger on a spiritual level, it is Mamak. This is not a quiet restaurant where you whisper to your fork. This is a place full of life. The queue outside feels like a promise. A promise that something good is coming. When the roti canai arrives, it honestly feels like a small edible mountain has been placed in front of you. Golden layers stacked with confidence. Crispy on the outside, soft inside. When you tear it apart, it almost whispers “you did the right thing coming here tonight”. Dip it into the curry and suddenly the day feels lighter. The curry deserves real respect. Rich without being heavy, fragrant without being overwhelming. The spices are bold but kind, like friends who know how to tell great stories without shouting. You finish your plate before you even realize it and then seriously consider ordering more because life is hard and roti helps. The vegetables are fresh and full of energy, cooked in a way that makes you smile and think maybe vegetables have feelings too. The main dishes arrive with confidence and a bit of drama, clearly aware they are the star of the table. Why four stars and not five? Because the wait requires patience. But that patience makes the meal taste even better. When you finally sit down, everything feels earned. This is not just a popular restaurant. It is a place that welcomes you back again and again. Come with friends, family, or just your hungry self. You will be well taken care of. Highly recommended, with love and a very happy stomach.

This place always has a big line out the front, so we had to try it. Overall, it was an enjoyable meal with a large variety of dishes on the menu. My favourite was the lamb curry, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Nice and tender meat with a good broth. The upstanding roti dish didn’t meet my expectations - personally, it felt it was too sweet and I don’t think it complemented the other dishes. Overall, it’s a casual restaurant with something for everyone.
