We chose the Royal Hotel Paddington for our staff Christmas dinner — admittedly not the best choice (even by our boss’s own words). The venue looks great online and gives the impression of a larger, more polished space. While the rooftop has a cool vibe, it’s much smaller than expected and involves quite a climb up multiple flights of stairs. It also doesn’t accommodate larger groups easily, so we ended up dining downstairs instead. We were initially taken upstairs for drinks, but there was some confusion around our booking and bar tab. We were left waiting while staff worked things out, before eventually being seated downstairs in what we thought would be a private or semi-private space — but it turned out to be right in front of the bar, which wasn’t ideal for a staff function. That said, there were some nice touches — a beautifully decorated Christmas tree next to a fireplace added a bit of festive atmosphere. Food-wise, it was underwhelming. My steak was ordered medium but came out overcooked and cold, with the garlic butter not even melting on top. Fries across the table were also undercooked, so it seemed fairly inconsistent overall. It would make a good local spot for drinks and a casual catch-up, particularly on the rooftop, but based on this experience, I wouldn’t recommend it for a group dinner where food is a focus.
Sunshine balcony drinks in the afternoon are spectacular. Feels like you’re stepping back into almost an old country western scene sitting upstairs looking down into the square. Love love love. Perfect little date / 2 people spot.
Hopeless. What used to be a GREAT place was sadly lacking today. Totally disinterested staff, average food and fairly empty on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Arrived for a booking well before time. Went up to the restaurant. Found our table in an empty room with no welcome or help. Sat, waited…. Eventually asked for menus and was told “Yeah, in a minute Mate” (I’m not your mate, mate) was given only one menu for our table of 4! “Oh sorry we’ve run out” so I went to an empty nearby table and got 3 more. Fish tacos were OK. Calamari passable. Finished drinks and went to another near by Pub for our lunch, which was great, welcoming and clean. Just sad to see an iconic Sydney pub slip soooooo much. Don’t waste your time. Plenty of others near by.
Great sunday roast spot in paddington. Very friendly staff. Portion for sunday roast was generous and it was delicious.
Went to their truffle dinner and it was terrible. Chefs were so slow they took 3 hours to finish the dishes in the tiny course they had. Though because they are a pub they probably did it on purpose so you'd keep ordering drinks. Nothing tastes good. The first dish was a garbage over burnt bread. There were no truffles except for the 1 dish with meat which had a little. Asides from the truffle the meat dish tasted good, its why this gets a 2 star on food and not 1 star. For $180 you're honestly better off flushing $168 down the toilet, going to mcdonalds and getting a big mac for the remaining $12. Quicker service, better taste, and you aren't held hostage for 3 hours. Avoid this place at all costs unless you want a beer. I take good photos. Don't let them fool you into thinking those abominations tasted good. Meat one was ok though, apparently the chef was from a good restaraunt who cooked it, so no wonder.
