What an amazing experience at Ramen Auru! 🤩 The ordering machine was super easy to use, and the authentic seating really added to the vibe. I loved the rich, flavorful broth and perfectly firm noodles. And don't even get me started on the gyoza – absolutely fantastic! 🥟🍜

We came here for lunch on Sunday and had a genuinely memorable experience. The restaurant features tatami seating. We ordered the ramen, and the broth was rich, flavourful, and very satisfying. If you prefer something lighter, you can ask them to dilute it. Ordering is done through a vending‑machine style menu: choose your dish, pay, then take a seat. When your number is called, you pick up your food from the counter. After finishing your meal, you return your tray and cutlery, and they provide tools for wiping down your table. It’s simple, efficient, and very reminiscent of Japan’s dining culture. Overall, it’s a unique and authentic ramen experience that blends great food with a fun, self‑service system. Definitely worth a visit if you’re craving Japanese flavours or want something different from the usual restaurant routine.

Honest Ramen Without the Fuss Crows Nest has firmly established itself as the Lower North Shore's unofficial capital for Japanese 🇯🇵 food. With so many Japanese restaurants packed into the area, there's no shortage of choice, and Ramen Aruru 🍜 has built quite a following. Hidden away upstairs in an unassuming building 🏢, it's easy to miss if you don't know where you're going. The building itself is home to three Japanese venues—a yakitori restaurant on the ground floor, Ramen Aruru on the first floor, and a Japanese sports ⚽️ bar occupying the upper levels. I arrived just before 5:00 pm and was surprised to see a queue already forming. Clearly this is "normal", as there are markings on the staircase showing patrons exactly where to line up! Ordering is done via an ticket machine🤖 that looks like it has been faithfully serving customers since the 1980s. It certainly adds character, although it isn't particularly efficient. First-time diners spend time working out the menu, so the queue moves slower than it should. Once inside, however, everything changes pace. The staff quickly collect your tickets and the kitchen springs into action. I took a seat at the counter, which I'd highly recommend. Watching the chefs prepare each bowl is part of the experience. Everything was clean, organised and efficient - the sort of precision you'd expect from a busy Japanese ramen shop. One small tip: avoid the seats closest to the entrance during winter. Every time the door opens, a blast of cold air comes straight through. Great for fresh air ... not so great if you're halfway through a hot bowl of ramen! I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen and a side of Gyoza. Presentation isn't what draws people here. The dishes are simple and unpretentious - more like a comforting home-cooked meal than something designed for Instagram. The Tonkotsu broth was rich without becoming overly heavy, with well-balanced flavours that made for an easy, satisfying meal. The chashu was tender, the noodles had good texture, and the gyoza were crisp with a juicy filling. Nothing was trying to be revolutionary, but everything was well executed. Looking around the restaurant, it wasn't difficult to see why it's popular with university students. The portions are generous, the prices are reasonable, and you leave feeling full without feeling like you've overspent. Would I queue an hour for it? Probably not. Would I happily come back when I'm craving a solid bowl of ramen on a cold evening? Absolutely. Sometimes restaurants don't need to reinvent a classic, they just need to do it well. No gimmicks. No unnecessary flair. Just honest ramen that quietly delivers every time.

Ramen Auru is a fantastic place for ramen and a relaxed catch-up with friends late at night. Tonkotsu broth is rich, creamy and full of deep porky flavour, pork chashu is smoky and tender, while the yuzu shio offers a lighter option that’s bright, refreshing and packed full of flavour. The restaurant has both bar and traditional tatami seating, making it suitable for different dining styles. Definitely worth visiting after 10pm, when the tonkotsu ramen is $15!

Simple Tatami mat or table seating options(we chose the former and were glad we had socks on as it was shoes off area). Vending machine ordering system was a cute touch. We had the Tonkatsu Ramen - nice hearty meal (even if the broth was a bit salty). We've had better ramen. And we've had worse. This was pretty good for the $20 price tag. With your order came a table number and when your meal was ready, they would call your number out for collection. After eating, bowls, cutlery had to be returned to the tray station. We had a hankering for ramen and found this cute place. Overall, good experience and glad we stumbled onto it. Go to the 2nd floor for your own experience.
