Beautifully located opposite the stunning Balmoral Beach, this modern Australian restaurant is an ideal spot for lunch. We chose to sit inside due to sun sensitivity & limited shade in the alfresco area. While the interior was comfortable, we did feel a little overlooked at times as staff attention was focused on outdoor diners. We selected the banquet option & enjoyed the food overall. A special mention to Isabelle, who was very friendly & most welcoming. With such a fantastic location & my partner’s uncle living just metres away, we’ll likely return as the setting is certainly the restaurant’s standout feature.
We had lunch at Betel Leaf on a mostly sunny autumn afternoon. The break in constant rain really helped: we were able to enjoy our time on the deck looking down at the Balmoral Bay. This improved the experience tremendously. We opted for the $89 per head banquet which simplified our options. It's a bit full-on and we ended up with a few takeaway boxes. The food is delicious and very generous in serves. A lot of attention to details to not just the taste, texture but also the presentation. A slight lacking in greens but otherwise good to go with a glass of drink. The service is quite responsive for lunch. The timing of the dishes are reasonably well planned. Before we realised, we have spent nearly two hours at Betel Leaf. Not bad for a lunch experience.
I've been to Betel Leaf a few times now and there's a reason I keep going back! The food there is super fresh, I really love the attention to detail they give to each dish. Just look at the fried barramundi we ordered, super cool and impressive presentation. The flavours are just so good I could eat those betel leaf prawns all day every day! Love the atmosphere of the outdoor sitting area, such a good view of the beach especially if you go at dinner time for the sunset. I think in most cases when I've visited we've made a booking beforehand? It's often very popular for dinner so I'd call ahead if you can for the best chance.
We decided to travel to the Balmoral Bathers Pavilion for dinner on a Wednesday night, to try the new Thai popup restaurant by the head chef Ty Bellingham of Sailors Thai. At the time we arrived there was plenty of parking, a great reason to go on a weekday, and headed in to the landmark location at Balmoral Beach. We travelled upstairs and proceeded to check-in (as you do in this COVID world we're currently in). Once those formalities were finished we were then shown to our table. The fit out of the restaurant looks fantastic with a vibe of the plantation style, a great feeling whilst looking out to the beach. We studied the menu and chose some of the typical Thai stalwarts, which included betel leafs, papaya salad, a prawn green curry, Pad Thai and crispy pork belly was a special for the night. We also ordered 12 of the delicious oysters as an entre which we enjoyed along with the poached prawn betel leafs. The food looked and tasted delicious and we paired it with a Claire Valley Riesling. The quantity of chilli was a great compromise for those that can't take to much heat and those that enjoy that extra spice, but if you're willing you could always ask for more! The night was finished with two very tasty desserts, one being a spiced coconut sorbet with a delicious basil syrup and tropical seasonal fruits, which looked amazing. The other was an ash gluttonous rice dessert like Kalamae, it may not look pretty but wow the flavour and texture. We left thanking the service staff and passed our compliments on to those in the kitchen for our great Thai culinary night.
What a view of Balmoral Beach while having a meal! Great atmosphere and perfect for any occasion! Had great service and very welcoming from all staff so big thank you for the kind hospitality. The food is above average - I have had better Thai food elsewhere. The drink variety is fantastic! Lots of choices to choose from!
