Me and my girlfriend had a lovely Thursday dinner here after work. As expected there was no cowd and we could get an outdoor table even without a booking on a nice summer evening. The waitress was very helpful to explain the dishes and even weigh in with recommendations. Service was prompt and the food was delicious. We've ordered sea food dishes as well as the previous one star reviewer : Barramundi taco, Tuna Sashimi. Also had bitter greens fetta and guac for starters. All dishes tasted great, I can confirm that the owner actioned the feedback and dished with fish were fresh. The atmosphere is very nice, romantic, Latin music and soft lights.

I rarely write reviews, however, I think it's important to share some experiences and having read previous expert comments I had high expectations of Gitano. We dined on a Wednesday evening and unlike other venues in Double Bay Gitano was not busy - how well a venue attracts its local crowd is often a great indicator of performance. The positive to this was that getting a table was not a problem. The venue interior was nice and moody. The service casual and informative. First thing to say is that the online menu is not the same as the restaurant menu. We ordered four seafood oriented dishes - basically prawn, Barramundi, and tuna based and an iceberg lettuce side dish. The first thing we immediately noticed was the smell of the prawns - which were obviously not fresh. The second was the firmness of the tuna - it had none. We could not comment on the battered barramundi, which is typically quite a large fish, except that the small pieces provided were mostly batter - so it was difficult to determine anything about the fish quality. For the prawn and barramundi dishes, the amount of sauce overwhelmed the portion sizes - you could taste mainly sauce and not much produce. The iceberg lettuce had the tell tale signs of brown leaves. Overall the produce quality was substandard - something the owners and the chef might consider. These comments are framed as individual diners and the experience might be different for the "all you can eat and drink" crowd. I could not recommend Gitano for individual discerning diners.

I went to Gitano on the 14th of September and left genuinely impressed. It turned out to be one of those evenings where everything just clicks — great food, lovely atmosphere, and service that made us feel looked after really well. From the second we walked in, the place felt alive and inviting. The décor strikes a beautiful balance between casual warmth and stylish energy — it’s the kind of spot where you immediately want to linger. The food was truly excellent. Every dish we tried had strong flavours and freshness; you can tell the kitchen is putting care into sourcing and execution. Now, what really stood out was the service. Even though we didn’t have a booking, one of the waitresses was fantastic (the one wearing glasses) — she managed to give us one of the best table available despite the restaurant being busy. Throughout the evening she was attentive, warm, and clearly committed to ensuring we had a great time. It’s one thing to have good food, but excellent service makes the experience memorable. We will definitely be back. Thank you so much!!!

The ambience is good and nice for socials. Starters (ceviche and tostadas) were nice and fresh. Birria and Quesadillas though nice in flavour were too greasy. Considering they are cooked in beef fat, the moment fat hit the plate it would solidify which didnt give a good culinary experience. Flan was too solid for our liking. Overall its a good mexican experience, but can be better.

The tacos are outstanding — fresh tortillas, generous fillings, and sauces that actually taste homemade. Whether you go for classic beef, chicken, pork, or something spicier, every bite hits with bold, well-balanced flavour. Nothing feels bland or watered down, which is something a lot of places get wrong. The burritos and bowls are just as impressive. Portions are generous without being sloppy, and everything is layered properly so you get a bit of everything in each bite. The rice is fluffy, the meat is juicy and well-seasoned, and the toppings are fresh and vibrant. You can tell the ingredients are good quality, and it makes a huge difference to the final result. One thing Ginato really nails is flavour without sacrificing freshness. The food is rich and satisfying, but it never feels greasy or heavy. Even after a big meal, you don’t leave feeling weighed down — just full and happy. The salsas and sauces deserve a special mention too, as they add heat, tang, and depth without overpowering the rest of the dish. The drinks and sides round everything out perfectly.
