Sydney does not have any good udon shops, and this one ain't it either. I have a lot to say about the noodles and how they're prepared it just ain't right. The soba and udon both had similar issues. Firstly, I don't understand why the noodles are served in a heated super hot stone bowl, by doing so it makes the soup hard to drink as it won't cool down and continues cooking the noodles making them soggy and overcooked. It was such a weird choice, besides looking good it made the noodles worse especially the soba. The actual noodles themselves were no good. I was looking forward to the udon, but I don't know what noodles they used. The sanuki udon was not chewy at all and was all broken up. As I ate it, I thought to myself, they should just used the frozen sanuki stuff and its a million times better. The soba, was super soft due to the broth being so hot and overcooking, it also lacked the buckwheat flavour. Again, these noodles do not have to be piping hot making the soup difficult to drink. The karaage was ok, probs the only thing I though was sorta edible.

This is a new Japanese restaurant in Ashfield with a menu dominated by udon and soba noodles, but in reality, they did a bit of everything and we were a large enough group to try them all. We began with an ice cold bottle of Hakkaisan Tokubetsu Junmai sake and the kids got some Japanese bottled apple juice and ramune. The sushi arrived first and they were above average in size with generous servings of meat. The rice had a reasonable texture but could do with a little bit more seasoning. The onigiri on the other hand were bland and needed more fillings. The udon soup was alright but some of the noodle strands were stuck together. The karaage chicken that came with it was delicious. The matcha soba did not taste very "matcha" and they were cooked for too long, having a mushy texture. The tempura prawns were alright with a bready batter. And I believe the egg yolks placed above the noodles/rice were meant to be runny, but they were all fully cooked. Overall, there were definitely improvements that can be made across the board, but it was a good start for a new restaurant. Service-wise, it would be good for staff to look for empty dishes to take away whenever they deliver more food to the tables.
