After trying our first Beef Wellington at The Botanist, our group was curious whether the saltiness we experienced there was typical so we headed to The James at The Langham to compare. The atmosphere was superb from the moment we arrived. It’s a beautiful, comfortable space (as expected from a 5‑star hotel), and the service throughout the evening was warm and attentive. The Beef Wellington pastry was impressively crisp, we could literally hear it crackle when the manager carved one for another table. He placed the slices on their side and poured the sauce onto the steak portion, keeping the pastry intact. Unfortunately, when ours was served, it’s the manager, and the waiter poured the sauce directly over the pastry, which made it soggy and took away that beautiful crispness. This inconsistency was disappointing, especially when we had just witnessed the ideal way to serve it. The steak itself was a bit chewy and didn’t have that melt‑in‑your‑mouth texture we were hoping for, though that may simply come down to the cut used. On the bright side, the mushroom layer was not salty at all! A complete contrast to our experience at The Botanist. With each restaurant having strengths and weaknesses, it’s genuinely hard to say which Beef Wellington was “better,” as both have room for improvement. Beyond the Wellington, The James offers a great cocktail menu, delicious sides and desserts, and a refined dining environment that makes the whole experience enjoyable. We’ll definitely return to explore more of their menu.
Incredible evening spent. Food- impeccable. Service was top notch, so attentive and respectable - our waitress Ashlin was amazing in every way. Our anniversary was very memorable as a result ❤️
Very lovely staffs and gorgeous interior. The food was also incredible, I recommend pre-ordering the beef wellington if you're coming. Definitely a must try if you're in Sydney!
Last week, my wife and I had a reservation for dinner at The James, to celebrate our birthdays in April/May. My wife's birthday is a landmark birthday and it needed to be somewhere grand. Staying at the Langham Hotel, we were excited to book our dinner in the reimagined, main dining room of the hotel. To start our meal, we ordered the unlimited, sparkling mineral water ($12) for us both; a delicious 'Governess Mocktail' ($18) for my wife and a sensational glass of '2007 Chateau Maucamps Haut Medoc', ($34) from Bordeaux, France, for me. We started with warm, crispy crusted, handmade sourdough and creamy cultured butter. My wife ordered six Sydney Rock Oysters which she enjoyed immensely and my entrée was the Tarte Fine of Heirloom Zucchini and goat's curd, was fabulous. For mains, I had the really delightful, Roast Fallow Deer ($60), served with brassicas and berries and my wife had the steamed, Blue Eye Cod ($56) with mussels and lardo. Both delicious and really good choices. We had a side of mashed potato with red wine jus, which was way too salty for our taste and it was removed from the bill. We had a second side of fresh bitter leaf, artichoke barigoule salad ($16) and that tasted very nice. For dessert, I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding Soufflé ($24) with vanilla icecream and toffee sauce, quite possibly the nicest soufflé that I have ever eaten and my wife had the really good size, Fig Tarte Tatin ($22), a very flavoursome sweet treat, indeed. We finished with petite fours and two well-made, flat white coffees ($15). We loved the whole meal, the tastes of the food and drinks; and the theatre of the presentation of the courses. All staff were professional and efficient. One thing for Langham members, this restaurant does not give us the 10% discount on our food or drinks. Regardless of that, this restaurant has been elevated to one of our favourites in Sydney and we will definitely return to try the other dishes. The James is highly recommended for lunch of dinner.
Great value at James Restaurant, located at The Langham Hotel, in the beautiful Western Rocks area. Enjoy a fantastic 50% off main courses from June 1 to the end of August 2026. The fixed menu offers several delectable choices, showcasing exceptional food. Be sure to book ahead!
