Friday night in Haymarket was busy with lines everywhere, so we ended up at Time Square BBQ & Cafe which is a Hong Kong diner and it turned out to be a pretty solid backup choice. It’s in George st but it’s one of those places you would easily walk past without thinking much about it but finally decided to try it out. We ordered the BBQ pork scrambled egg rice and the duck wonton noodle soup. First thing that stood out was the portion size. Both dishes were generous and definitely filling for the price. The scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, soft and silky with that classic Hong Kong café style texture that’s hard to get right. The BBQ pork was decent too, slightly sweet and paired well with the rice. That said, the scrambled egg rice became a bit heavy halfway through. By the end I couldn’t finish it because it started to feel too greasy. Still tasty, just richer than expected. Even the siracha didn’t help. I would recommend getting the Hong Kong milk tea to go with it. The duck wonton noodle soup was a better choice out of the two. The noodles had a great texture, springy without being overly firm, and the broth was comforting without tasting overly salty. The wontons were generously filled and the duck added a nice depth of flavour to the whole bowl. Overall, not the most mind-blowing meal but somewhere that is easily accessible and reliable late-night option with big portions and satisfying comfort food if you’re craving Hong Kong-style café dishes.
Times Square BBQ Café on George Street is a classic cha chaan teng with a friendly, welcoming vibe. I had been searching all over Sydney for salt and pepper fried chicken over rice, jiu yim gai, but most places only seem to offer the salt and pepper style with calamari, tofu or pork. The lady boss was incredibly friendly and immediately said she could customise it with chicken for me. I had already finished dinner and was completely stuffed, but her enthusiasm convinced me to cave and order one for takeaway anyway. It hit the spot and fully satisfied the craving. Wasn't the best I've had, but I'm grateful they ttied. Very glad I popped in to ask.
Love the salty chicken. The meals we ordered for dine in came in big portions. So make sure before ordering, especially if you are a small eater like myself. Or come here if you are hungry. The meals come with free drinks like ice lemon tea, hot tea or water. The lady server is very cheerful, helpfull and fast to serve
We walked past this café several times before finally deciding to give it a try—and it certainly did not disappoint. The dishes were thoughtfully presented, and the flavours were impressively authentic, closely resembling my previous dining experiences in Hong Kong. What stood out in particular was the lemon black tea, which was exceptionally refreshing and reminiscent of the classic style served in Hong Kong cafés. The attentive and efficient service further enhanced the experience, creating an atmosphere that genuinely felt like dining in Hong Kong. The interior décor was also a highlight, featuring Cantonese expressions and references to various suburbs and locations across Hong Kong, which made it enjoyable to explore while dining. Overall, it was a very enjoyable visit and certainly somewhere I would happily return to.
The takeaway Chinese bbq makes the best roast pork but it’s always sold out by the time I get there. So I’m always craving for good Chinese roast pork This place will be 2nd runner up I also like the posters and murals of Hk Rice that came with the pork was big so wasn’t able to finish it. The pork tasted delicious except not as crispy as my number one takeaway shop
