Holy Basil at Darling Square is one of the most beautifully designed Thai–Lao restaurants I’ve visited. The moment you step inside, the décor feels almost like walking into a small palace — warm gold tones, intricate details, and a softly lit interior that creates a luxurious, welcoming atmosphere. It’s elegant without being pretentious, and the ambience makes dining here feel special. I ordered their signature Hot & Spicy Chicken Fried Rice, and it was excellent. The presentation was colourful and appetising, and the flavour was even better — fragrant, balanced, and satisfying without being too heavy. The portion was just right for a light dinner, and the seasoning had a pleasant warmth without overwhelming the dish. Service was friendly and efficient, and the overall experience felt calm and comfortable, even during the busy dinner hour. Holy Basil is a lovely choice for anyone who appreciates good food in a beautifully designed space.

Great place for authentic Thai restaurant in Darling Harbour. Place was nicely decorated and spacious. Staff were very friendly and the service was fast. Ordered their soft shell crab and Thai king prawns. Both were perfectly cooked and not over cooked. Batter was light, crispy and nicely seasoned (addicting). Also love the deep fried ice cream. Crispy and decadent caramel sauce.

Holy Basil offers reliable, delicious Thai-Laos food in a bustling and cozy atmosphere. My table ordered the lamb Pad Kee Mao and Laos Papaya Salad (not pictured) at an extra spicy level, and boy did they deliver! That spice was a sucker punch! The biggest let down of the night was the Roast Duck in Plum Sauce, not because it wasn’t delicious, but rather the serving size was too small for our liking, considering the price. The Marinated Dry Beef, while quite tasty, would not be something we would order again. It’s more of a snacking jerky and less of a dish you order for dinner, but still good nonetheless. (Be aware that it is quite tough.) This was my second time at Holy Basil and I would recommend any noodle dish or salad for first-timers, and don’t underestimate the spice!

I found this restaurant last year and went three times again this year because the food and the service is soo good! Whenever I visit Sydney I will be going to Holy Basil. The food is always fresh and I love sitting near to the kitchen to see how the chefs cook the food before passing it forward to the plating section who ensure great presentation before it’s sent to your table. The staff are so polite and humble, they are a joy.👏👏

I basically came for that luxurious entrance, haha. The spring rolls were excellent—crispy, full, and really well‑seasoned. The soft‑shell crab tasted like what most Thai restaurants serve: crispy on the outside, salty, and pretty standard overall. The beef tongue was cooked perfectly, and the cut they used was great—very tender and delicious. Highly recommended. There was also a fried rice dish that tasted amazing, but I can’t remember the name… The interior décor is very upscale; even the chairs and tables look expensive, which actually makes the tableware feel a bit out of place. The only downside is that the place gets extremely crowded and very noisy.
