Thai Pothong in Newtown is a wonderful restaurant and one of the nicest places to enjoy authentic Thai cuisine. The restaurant itself is very spacious, beautifully decorated with traditional Thai-inspired décor, and has a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes the dining experience even more enjoyable. We started with the Tom Yum prawn soup, which was good but I felt the consistency I was thick and more like curry feel rather than the soup. The fresh prawns and button mushrooms were of excellent quality and made the soup truly satisfying. The Beef Chilli Basil with steamed rice was another standout dish. The beef was exceptionally tender and of excellent quality, cooked perfectly and bursting with flavour. It is definitely a must-try. The staff were friendly, attentive and efficient throughout our visit, and the restaurant was spotless and very well maintained, reflecting their high standards of cleanliness. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the pricing. While the food quality, ambiance and overall dining experience are excellent, I found the menu to be on the expensive side and not the best value for money. That said, if you’re looking for authentic Thai food in a beautiful setting with great service, Thai Pothong is certainly worth a visit.
We went there for a friend's birthday. It was our first patronage and we were all blown away by how attentive the waiters and waitresses were. We chose from the top sellers rather than the banquet menu. Banquet menu is probably more value worth but would miss the popular dishes. For reference, our orders for 5pp: Popular Mix, Soft Shell Crab with Curry Powder Sauce, Morning Glory (Seasonal), Thai Herbal Barramundi, Tom Yum Prawn Soup, Coconut Seafood, Jasmine rice, Amber Emerald Veil and Golden Pandan Delight. All were great and sufficient for 5. I would probably swap the desserts from Amber Emerald Veil and Golden Pandan Delight to the Mango Sticky Rice and Black Sticky Rice with Custard or ice cream options though. In terms of service, the restaurant was certainly attentive - the waiters and waitresses will look after the guests in the food and water refills. They gave a complimentary gift, took photos of the celebration party and emailed the recipient the next day. Overall, great experience even though the price is on the higher end comparatively.
Thai Pothong has been here for as long as I remember, however I haven't been there recently until last week. The place is huge with a downstairs too and has a lot of decorative pieces around. I definitely recommend to book in advance. I have mixed opinions about the service. We had a booking but when we were let into the restaurant, we were taken downstairs and the upstairs again and it felt weird that we had to follow the waiter a bunch to find a free table when we booked and were on time. However, the service was great at the end when we asked for takeaway boxes and they did it for us in these containers that had separate rice and main areas. I also want to add that I hate the tablet menu since it was so slow and annoying to use. I would have preferred a physical menu or a QR code. The massaman beef curry was nice, not too much to comment on. Just a decent massaman. We tried the soft shell crab special which had a nice funkiness to it and the crab was still crunchy. I really liked that the rice was $4 pp and unlimited refills. The standout dish to me was the pandan fried roti. The coconut ice cream in the middle with pieces of jackfruit complemented the pandan cream so well. The roti was nice and crispy and I love the presentation. Overall, a decent Thai spot and it is definitely well suited for large crowds, however the taste to me was only slightly above average so not the most worth.
This is the most perfect place to eat delicious flavour packed Thai food. We ordered the red chicken curry, chicken pad ke mao, salt pepper soft shell crab, chill fried snapper, salt and pepper calamari and prawn patties. Everything was exceptionally delicious, seasoned well, genorous amounts and nice quick service. I think whatever you order from the entire menu will be incredible. The customer service is so friendly and the gift shop is so beautiful. Will definitely visit again with my family and friends.
I have never been to a restaurant with such outstanding service. The food is great and all came out in a timely manner. The staff are so friendly and even went the extra mile to give my partner and I a great experience. This has to be my favourite Thai restaurant in all of Sydney.
