I’ve been here a few times and always enjoy it. Their Northern-style beef pho has a clear and fresh broth with lots of spring onion, which tastes quite different from Southern-style pho. The fried dough sticks are great with the soup. I also really like the grilled pork vermicelli — the pork goes well with lettuce, perilla and mint, and the vermicelli tastes great in the sweet and sour sauce. Good portion sizes, around $20 per person, and a nice place for a casual meal with friends.
First experience with Northern Vietnamese cuisine! You MUST try the bun cha. It was their best dish. The meat was cooked to perfection and the flavours were all there. Rice noodles were extremely fresh and bouncy and the pickles had just the right amount of acidity. I would travel to eat this again. I really enjoyed how light yet flavourful the broth of their pho was. I wasn't too familiar with the differences between northern and southern Vietnamese pho. But now I know! I may even like it better than southern pho. The crispy chicken with sticky rice was also amazing. Their portion sizes were also impressive and very affordable for uni students imo. Very authentic (and also gets the tick of approval from my Viet mum)
I can absolutely see why Pho Viet Xua 1919 is always so busy. I was lucky enough to get in before the crowds, and it didn’t take long for the place to fill up. The stir-fried beef pho was the absolute standout. I’d never tried Northern style pho before, and I loved how different it was from the more common style. The broth was crystal clear yet packed with flavour, the beef was tender and beautifully marinated, and the whole bowl was incredibly comforting. Definitely add the chilli if you enjoy a bit of heat! It packs a serious punch and takes the dish up another notch. The fried dough was a little too oily for my liking, but it was still delicious dipped into the broth. We also ordered the lemongrass chicken with rice, and once again the marinade was the star. The chicken was juicy, fragrant and full of flavour. Simple, authentic food that’s clearly earned its following. I’ll definitely be back!
Bún chả ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ my fav dish of the day! Dipping the vermicelli in this grilled pork in fish sauce gets you going one bite after another. The soup wasn’t as heavy as the ones i’ve tried before but not in a negative way. There was no compromise in the flavor ! Beef combination phở ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The portion was huge!!! Loved the light but flavorful soup. I thought the beef could be a bit more tender but it was an enjoyable meal regardless Grilled BBQ Pork Chop, Caramelized Pork and Egg with Rice ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ the seasoning for everything was great, pork chop was grilled well but caramelised pork could have been softer imo. It also comes with clear soup which was my favorite part of the meal! Iced Custard Apple Tea and Iced Peach Tea ⭐️⭐️⭐️ both were a bit too sweet for me (i personally can’t take too much sweet too) but good for me they had self-serve hot tea available. After pouring the tea to my liking, i enjoyed the drinks! I liked that they included real fruit pieces in the drinks as well. I also learned that Northern vs Southern Vietnamese Cuisines have subtle differences. For instance, Northern tastes lighter and also uses different toppings/sides compared to Southern! The tables were full most of the times so that just means how authentic and well-made their food is!
A popular Marrickville eatery in Sydney specialising in authentic Northern Vietnamese cuisine that I will be coming back to try more of the dishes! My friends and I tried the bun cha hano, northern style stir-fried beef pho with fried dough stick and the combination sticky rice with grilled chicken, caramelised pork, fried egg and side soup. Each dish was very tasty, not over-powering relying on the natural taste of fresh ingredients for flavours, a must try! Food comes fast and staff is friendly, a great spot to eat 🤤
